Functional Safety Engineer

For our clients industrial sustainability and energy projects, we are looking for a Functional Safety Engineer who takes ownership of functional safety throughout the project lifecycle. The role covers concept, basic and detailed engineering phases and supports execution, commissioning and modifications where required. 

The Functional Safety Engineer acts as the technical authority for IEC 61511 / IEC 61508 compliance, ensuring that Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) are correctly specified, verified, implemented, validated and modificated. The role is strongly interface-driven, interacting with process engineering, E&I, automation, operations, maintenance, HSE and project management.

Fonction

Purpose of the role 
• Ensure compliance with IEC 61511 / IEC 61508 across the full safety lifecycle 
• Translate process risks (HAZOP/LOPA) into robust, compliant SIF and SRS 
• SIF from concept through design, implementation and operation 
• Provide expert guidance on SIL classification, verification, validation and assessment 
• Act as functional safety counterpart towards internal teams and contractors  

Concept & design phase 
• Participation in hazard and risk assessments (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA,…) 
• Preparation and ownership of SRS 
• Functional safety input during basic and detailed engineering reviews 
• Interface management with process, E&I, automation, maintenance, HSE and project engineering 

Engineering 
• Evaluation of SIL calculations 
• Evaluation of safety architectures, hardware and software designs 
• SIS design following FS standards, company guidelines and best practices 
• Management of functional safety deliverables and documentation 

Implementation, testing & commissioning 
• Review and approval of FAT and SAT protocols related to safety functions 
• Functional safety oversight during commissioning and start-up 
• Definition and review of proof test procedures 
• Review / preparation of test sheets and determination of test intervals. 

Operational support & modifications 
• Management of Change (MOC) from a functional safety perspective 
• Review impact of modifications on existing SIFs and SIL compliance 
• Actively participate in knowledge sharing on functional safety topics 

• TÜV-certified Functional Safety Engineer 
• At least 5 years’ experience as a Functional Safety Engineer in industrial environments 
• Strong knowledge of IEC 61511 and IEC 61508 standards 
• Hands-on experience with SRS, SIL verification and safety lifecycle management 
• Familiar with hazard analysis techniques (HAZOP, LOPA, …) 
• Background in E&I, automation or process engineering preferred 
• Structured, critical and assertive, with strong communication skills 
• Able to operate independently while integrating seamlessly in project teams 
• Fluent in Dutch and English
